Five years on, the 27-year-old still has a burning passion for photography. According to him, a good picture is one that "tells you a story in a single shot, captures the emotions of that moment and reflects the mood of that split second." Ever since his early days as an imager, Mervin Lim has been fascinated by the beauty of a good picture. In fact, the youthful and enthusiastic shutterbug has been fiddling with cameras and lenses since his teens. Five years ago, he decided to turn his hobby into a lifelong career by setting up Eternal Creation, a studio that specialises in wedding photography. Today, Eternal Creation boasts a rich history in capturing precious moments for many a bashful couple. With people being very much the, no pun intended, focus of his camera, how does he alleviate his newly married subjects' shyness and unease to obtain the most natural and flattering shots? "Communicating with the couple is essential. By listening and talking to them, you will have a better understanding of their personalities and a clearer idea of what works best for them. The most important thing to remember is that every couple is different in their own way. Some couples are very adventurous and will be game to take up any of your suggestions, while other couples may be more reserved in comparison. If you impose the wrong style on the wrong subjects, chances are you will not get the desired shots. So before the start of every photo shoot, I make it a point to listen to my customers to find out what makes them tick. In every shot, I try to capture the moment in the most natural way without causing any awkwardness to the couple facing the camera," says Mervin. How would he describe his photography style? "Basically, my style is rather fluid. It is based on the subject's character and I change according to the subject's likes and dislikes. Of course, natural poses, even candid shots, are what I aim to achieve with my photographs. Currently, I am adopting the style of a photojournalist. Each picture has to convey a message. The focus of the picture need not be a person; it could be a small detail of an event that tells the viewer a story that one may normally overlook. Simply put, it is just like an MTV, frozen into a static shot." Why wedding photography? "I have always been interested in the wedding customs and traditions of different ethnic groups. Doing wedding photography allows me to gain more insight into these traditional practices and perhaps make a few new friends at the same time! But these are not the main reasons. The main motivation comes from the fact that you make real people look beautiful on the most important day of their lives."
